How do cam connectors work?
Cam connectors are components of flat-pack furniture that enable a strong and stable connection between different parts. They were first introduced by IKEA and have since become a standard in the furniture industry due to their simplicity and effectiveness.
The way they work can be divided into five steps:
- Preparation: The panels to be connected each have holes into which the parts of the cam connector fit.
- Inserting the connector: One part of the connector, the cam (also often called the housing), is inserted into the hole in one of the panels.
- Installing the bolt: A matching bolt is screwed from the opposite side through the other panel into the cam housing.
- Turning the cam: Using an Allen key or Phillips screwdriver, the cam is turned. This rotation pulls the bolt into the housing and presses the two panels firmly together.
- Completion: When the cam is fully turned (usually half a turn), the connection is complete and stable.
Cam connectors are a simple and effective method for joining furniture parts firmly and securely without the need for complicated tools or techniques.
