How do I adjust a screw-on hinge?

Adjusting a screw-on hinge is less complicated than it may seem at first glance. In general, screw-on hinges consist of three main parts: the base (attached to the piece of furniture), the bracket (attached to the door), and the adjustment screws. The adjustment screws are the key to setting the hinge.

Here are the basic steps:

  • Vertical adjustments: Look at the hinge from the side. You should see a screw that is screwed into the base component of the hinge. Loosen this screw slightly and move the door up or down until it is in the correct position. Tighten the screw again.
  • Horizontal adjustments: The horizontal adjustment is made with the screw attached to the edge of the bracket. Loosen this screw slightly and slide the door from left to right until it is properly aligned. Tighten the screw again.
  • Depth adjustments: The depth adjustment is the last screw on the bracket, closer to the door. Loosen this screw and swivel the door forward or back to make it flat and flush with the frame. Then tighten the screw.

Remember to always make only a small adjustment first and then check how the door is positioned before making any further adjustments.
