How do I measure a door threshold correctly?

Correctly measuring a door threshold is an important step when replacing or installing a new door. The following steps will help you do this.

Step 1: Measuring the width

  • Take a measuring tape and measure the distance from one side wall to the other. This gives you the width of the door threshold.

Step 2: Measuring the depth

  • Measure the distance from the front of the threshold (the side facing the room you are entering) to the back (the exterior side). This is the depth of your door threshold.

Step 3: Measuring the height

  • Now take the measuring tape and measure from the floor to the top of the door threshold. This gives you the height.

When taking all of these measurements, make sure you are as precise as possible. Even the smallest differences can cause your new door threshold to not fit properly. Write down all three measurements, as you will need them to find a suitable replacement threshold.
