How does a door holder work?

A door stop is a practical device that prevents doors from slamming or closing uncontrollably. It can be especially useful in situations where you want to keep the door open for an extended period of time, or to prevent damage to walls and furniture caused by uncontrolled door movement.

Basically, most door stops work on a very simple principle:

  • First, the door stop is mounted on the floor or on the wall, depending on the model. The position is usually chosen so that the door is held at the desired opening width.
  • Then a counterpart (often a magnet or a plate) is attached to the lower side of the door. It is positioned so that it meets the part mounted on the floor or wall when the door is in the desired position.
  • When the door is opened to the desired position, the two parts of the door stop come together and create a holding force that keeps the door open.
  • To close the door, this holding force simply has to be overcome with a slight pulling or pushing motion.

So, a door stop is a simple but effective solution for keeping doors open in a controlled way and preventing damage.
