How does a strike plate work?

A strike plate serves as part of the connection between the door leaf and the frame when closing a door. In particular, the strike plate is used to receive the latch bolt and deadbolt of the lock when the door is closed, contributing to security and stability.

  • The deadbolt and latch are parts of the door lock located on the door leaf. The deadbolt is the component that moves when the key is turned, while the latch moves when the door handle is turned.
  • The strike plate is a metal piece mounted in a recess in the door frame. It has one or two openings through which the deadbolt and latch pass.
  • When the door is closed, the latch first meets the strike plate and is pushed back into the door leaf. Once the door is fully closed, the latch snaps into the opening in the strike plate and keeps the door closed.
  • When the door is locked, the deadbolt extends from the lock into the second hole in the strike plate, providing additional security and stability.

Strike plates are available in various shapes, sizes, and designs to meet different security requirements and to suit different types of locks and doors.
