What size wooden dowels do I need for my project?

The correct size of a wooden dowel depends on various factors. First of all, the thickness of the wood must be taken into account.

  • As a general guideline, the wooden dowel should have a diameter that is about 1/2 of the thickness of the thicker of the two pieces of wood to be joined. For example, if the thickest piece of wood is 24 mm, a 12 mm wooden dowel would be suitable.
  • The type of joint must also be considered. For corner joints, a smaller dowel is often used, while T-joints and cross joints usually require larger dowels.
  • Last but not least, the load the joint will be subjected to should be taken into account. For heavily loaded joints, larger dowels should be used.

Always remember that both wooden dowels and the drill bits required for them are available in various sizes. Choosing the right size of both the dowel and the drill bit is crucial to the success of your project.
