Whether for cabinets and dressers or even toy boxes or jewelry boxes – hinges come in many forms in everyday life. No wonder, because they are indispensable. And craftsmen now have plenty to choose from, as more and more components have been designed for special applications in recent years.
One category is screw-on hinges, which can be fitted in place with just a few simple steps. We also stock plenty of them in our online shop. Browse through the products and find the ideal screw-on hinge or strap hinge for your doors and furniture!
Hinge or strap?
Many craftsmen first ask themselves: do I need a hinge or a strap? A hinge is a movable fitting consisting of two leaves connected by a pin. In most cases these are non-detachable hinges, where the frame leaf is mounted, for example, on the cabinet body and the door leaf on the moving cabinet door. The pin ultimately serves as the pivot axis.
A door strap or screw-on strap for a door has exactly the same swivel function, but differs from the classic hinge in one important respect: it is separable. This means the leaves can be taken apart. In both cases, the length of the axis determines the height of the respective hinge or strap. It is also important to know exactly what load the component will later have to bear, what opening angle is desired and on which surface the hinge is to be mounted. Hinges and straps can, for example, be screwed, welded or clipped in place. There are also non-jointed hinges – for example, especially for caravans.
Four important aspects when choosing
The possibilities are therefore varied – and for this reason it is often not immediately easy to choose the right screw-on hinge or strap for doors, furniture and more. The following considerations and aspects will help you make your choice:
- Surface: Anyone wishing to mount hinges on wood or concrete surfaces should choose screw-on versions. For metal, however, hinges designed for welding are the better option.
- Application location: If you want to use the screw-on hinge outdoors, weather-resistant materials are a must. In that case, it is best to choose stainless steel or rust-free steel. If weather exposure plays a smaller role, other materials such as plastic can also be used. Its advantage is that it is particularly lightweight. It is therefore well suited for small furniture, storage compartment lids or caravans.
- Weight: The weight of the door to be mounted must correspond to the load-bearing capacity of the hinge. For example, brass hinges designed specifically for furniture construction cannot cope with heavy door leaves.
- Installation: This depends on your individual preferences: do you prefer a classic hinge or an internal screw-on hinge? Also don’t forget to choose the correct handing, i.e. left or right.
